Cooking Gifts for New Cooks

Monday, January 5th, 2009

There are a myriad of reasons to be thinking of gift ideas for a new cook in your life. Perhaps this is a new bride or a college grad that is out on their own. There are many reasons and life milestones that create new cooks! Here are some gifts ideas they’ll love:

Silicone baking pans. These are the latest thing and they are very easy to use. Silicone baking pans are also quite easy to clean. You can make muffins, cupcakes, bread loaves and so many other items quite easily using silicone baking pans.

Cookbooks. Every new cook needs cookbooks; this is where they get their inspiration. Even if cooks create their own recipes, often they begin with a formal recipe. Try a classic cookbook such as the Joy of Cooking that goes from soup all the way to desserts. Or one of the themed cookbooks such as Top Chef Season 4 that gives recipes from this season’s popular chefs on Bravo’s television show, Top Chef.

Aprons and accessories. This is another popular gift because every cook should have good materials to use while cooking — and many wind up scrimping on these things so they’ll have money to spend on ingredients. Get them a good classic apron to protect their clothing. Also get them oven mitts and gloves so they can take things out of the oven and microwave easily.

Spices and fresh herbs. This is a great gift idea for so many new cooks. You truly can taste the difference when you are cooking with fresh spices and herbs. Treat them to some wonderful new spices and herbs they’ll enjoy. Building up your library of spices and herbs can take any cook awhile. They’ll appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness.

Classic Holiday Gifts for Cooks

If you know a cook then you’ll want to be sure to know about these great classic holiday gift ideas for cooks. Cooks are always on the lookout to add to their kitchens and their supplies of tools.

The biggest “tip” to buying a great holiday gift for a cook is knowing what type of cooking they like to do — and giving them a gift that compliments this type of cooking. If they love to barbecue, then give them a barbecue cookbook or barbecue sauces. Or if they love to bake, some new baking pans could be ideal. There are so many things you can do in the kitchen that knowing exactly what type of cooking they do is very helpful.

Cookbooks are one of the most popular gifts you can give a cook. It seems like new cookbooks come out daily — that’s because they do! You can find wonderful cookbooks on every topic quite easily at your local bookstore. Cooks are addicted to cookbooks and will appreciate the gift of a cookbook. Try the Top Chef Cookbook for something original — or a regionally themed cookbook for popular favorites.

Cooking magazine subscriptions are also a great gift idea and are very reasonably priced. Even if your cook subscribes, this gift could extend their cooking subscription — something they would appreciate. Cooking magazines are a great way to learn new techniques and read interviews with the hottest innovators in cooking.

Cooking tools are an ideal gift for every cook. You can find large cooking tools or tiny tools. Try a classic cast iron frying pan — something cooks simply lust after. Or even a rolling pin and some cookie cutters in fun shapes. Tools last a long time but passionate cooks often wear their favorite tools out much quicker than the typical cook will. New tools are an ideal choice.

The Gift of Holiday Baking For Special Requests

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Many cooks look forward to holiday time, as this is the ideal time to give loved ones the gift of your holiday baking. Cookies, cakes, pies and homemade breads are popular treats. There are so many delicious holiday treats you can give your loved ones.

When you give holiday baking, you’ll want to keep some basic things in mind. It is critical to know if any loved ones have food allergies. Someone with a nut allergy can be severely affected by anything that even comes into contact with nuts, not just an item that has nuts. There also may be loved ones that are watching their weight or have other dietary restrictions. The more information you have, the better holiday baking gifts you’ll be able to give.

Just because someone has restrictions doesn’t mean you can’t bake for them. You simply need to have clear guidelines for them. In the case of nut allergies, you may want to ask someone for suggestions on how you can bake safely for them other than not using nuts – they may suggest you get a new cookie sheet that hasn’t been touched by nuts ever. This is an inexpensive sacrifice to make for the health of a loved one! If someone has dietary restrictions, ask them what they can and cannot eat and any suggestions on what they love to eat now. That can help you discover new recipes for them.

Many people are watching their weight and appreciate healthy style treats. Appropriate portions and treats that keep your waistline in mind will be welcome in any home. Attaching the recipe and an idea of how many calories are in the cookies or baked good is a wonderful idea.

Baked goods are a terrific gift. Don’t just drop a calorie laden, sugar filled treat that people can’t enjoy at their doorsteps and be surprised when they can’t eat it. Remember that people with dietary restrictions need to respect their needs year round to stay healthy. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness and delicious treats!

Gifts for New Cooks

When young adults start out in life, often they must learn how to cook. Cooking is fun — but often young adults are surprised by just how many items they need to cook with! If there is a young adult in your life, it can be a great idea to give them a gift to help them cook for themselves. There are many fun gift ideas that new cooks would love.

Cookbooks are an easy choice for new cooks. There are literally cookbooks for every type of cuisine you can think of and every course in a meal. How to Cook Everything is a great starting cookbook for new cooks as it gives lots of beginning instruction on basic things that cooks learn how to do — and that lots of cookbooks simply don’t explain in the directions. Other cookbooks — like a chocolate dessert cookbook, can be lots of fun to make sweet treats.

Gadgets can be fun gifts for new cooks, but aren’t always necessary. It depends on the cook and their personality. Some people truly love gadgets. They love the idea of using a new “toy” and having the latest of anything that is on the market. If that describes this person to a “T” then you’ll want to consider getting them cooking gadgets. Another reason to get them cooking gadgets is if you know that cooking gadgets would save them a lot of time or money to do something. A pizza stone is a great cooking tool for cooks to own that makes pizza taste delicious. Somehow the pizza stone simply works better than other things.

Classes or cooking lessons can also be an ideal gift. Now don’t think that this has to be a formal gift. You can make up your own gift certificate to teach the new cook how to make special dishes that you know they enjoy. If the new cook has always enjoyed your stews or soups, then make them a gift certificate to teach them how to make these on their own. They will be thrilled to have a little TLC and guidance in the kitchen to get started.

Gifts from the Kitchen

A gift from your heart is the one that matters the most. It is little surprise than many people would give gifts from the heart from their kitchen. You can get very creative and select delicious things to give from  your kitchen. This is an ideal way to give someone a very personal and thoughtful gift.

Flavored olive oil is an easy gift to make and many cooks appreciate this as a gift. You’ll need a fancy looking bottle of olive oil, and herbs and other things to flavor it with. Let these herbs marinate in the olive oil for several days for best taste. Some great herbs to select are basil, tarragon, oregano and thyme.

A jar filled with cookie mix ready to make is a fun gift to give many families. These became very popular several years ago. You can make this look so pretty by lining the items along the bottom of the jar to create patterns. So if you give chocolate chip cookie mix then make lines of chocolate chips and then add in the baking soda or the raw oatmeal and all of the other ingredients. This is a fun gift to give families with young children as cookie baking is a fun gift for families to do.
